Your Back Pain

Visit your doctor (or call NHS Direct, Tel. 0845 4647) if you have been suffering with back pain for over a week, or if you also experience any of the following symptoms:
  • Numbness, weakness or pins and needles in the legs over a prolonged period
  • Pain that travels to the chest or pain high up in your back
  • Pain running down one or both legs
  • Unsteadiness on your feet
  • Difficulty passing urine

Upper back pain

Upper back pain can be a result of dysfunction in the joints that attach the ribs to the spine, sometimes caused by an accident or repetitive movement

Middle back pain

Bad posture, sudden twisting or turning, obesity and pregnancy, can lead to inflammation of the joints, nerve damage and worn cartilage

Lower back pain

Muscle and ligament damage caused by sudden movements, bad posture or injury are common causes. Symptoms include muscle spasms and pain in the legs
